Charming Chempaka

A hybrid tree of the magnolia family, Michelia alba is a splendid addition to an Asian-style garden. In south-east Asian countries Michelia alba is a common landscape tree because of its lovely shape, its unusual white spider flowers, but most importantly for its intoxicating perfume.

In Malaysia, the tree is known as Chempaka. In Australia it is often sold under the name Pak Lan Hue, which is Hokkien language for Spider Orchid Flower.

Chempaka welcomes our visitors with its fragrance from October until May. For us, however, it is a sign of the comfort of home: when alighting from the car, we are greeted by its sweet bouquet.

Wishing you hours of enjoyment and contentment in your garden…
